You see the term “high-speed internet” often in advertising. What exactly qualifies when you say “high-speed internet” in Twin Falls & across Southern Idaho?
An Actual Definition
You may not know this, but there is an actual defined standard for “high-speed internet.” The standard has shifted based on how people use the internet. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) currently defines high-speed internet at 100 mbps download speed, and 20 mbps upload speed.
In their analysis, the FCC concluded that modern internet usage often requires heavy, simultaneous upstream and downstream data for activities like telework, remote learning, telehealth, and the many “smart home” devices that now connect to the internet – such as robotic vacuums and refrigerators.
What does that mean?
MBPS means megabits per second; for reference, your average MP3 song is between 3 and 10mb.
When you surf the internet, you are both sending and receiving information. Think of the internet like a series of pipes: everyone’s connection has a download pipe and an upload pipe, and data is the water traveling through those pipes. MBPS is like the width of the pipe. There is also something called latency, which is like the length of the pipe.
Which type of internet provider should I choose for high-speed internet?
Different ways to deliver internet will affect performance. For example, satellite internet often offers fairly high upload and download speeds, but latency affects performance: because the data travels from your kit to a satellite in space, the data takes a while due to the sheer distance it travels. The effect of this can be seen when having online video meetings, for example – there may be a delay in responses in back-and-forth conversations.
